Hey all,
I’ve been interviewing for a role for the past 2 months or so, through multiple meetings, interviews, etc. In total the time I’ve probably spent in an ‘interview’ setting with this company and my would-be supervisor is somewhere around 7-8 hours spread over many weeks.
It’s been a long, slow burn as we both suss each other yet. It’s a new company (5 employees), and they created a sort of jack of all trades position for me but generally focussed in marketing.
The company is all about ‘we really want to cater to you and make this work for all of us’ and focus on company culture and what not. From the outside it seems appealing, but being a small company I worry they are quite overworked as they get things running.
They gave me an unofficial offer recently and the salary expectation was quite significantly below what I thought it would be. They offered 42,000 for an associate marketing manager type role. We never really discussed salary expectations more formally, so maybe that’s on me for not communicating more clearly.
I’d like to negotiate for more, but at the same time just aren’t really psyched on this position unless they offered closer to 55-60k, which I doubt they would do given that they’re a small company. I’m preparing myself to turn down their offer. I don’t want to be rude and immediately dismissive because they’ve invested a lot of time and effort into ‘creating’ this position for me and vetting me through our many meetings.
Is there a way to negotiate for a higher salary, but also keep one foot out the door so to speak and still be in good terms despite turning down their offer? We’re have many mutual connections and word gets around quickly in our area.
