Just hit my breaking point. A role I am more than qualified for and been asking for is being filled by an outside candidate with less experience...
I am so fucking mad right now I can't even thing straight. I'm looking for a new job if this happens...
I am at a company (Fortune 1000) I really actually enjoy for the most part. When it comes to soft perks they are great, a good work life balance, the ability to work from home, 3 weeks vacation + personal days, a chill environment etc. The only thing which wasn't great was the pay but while interviewing they said this starting role (we will call it an ABC) only lasts 12-18 months and after that and after you get a certain designation you get promoted to a different role (we will call XYZ), that according to Glassdoor pays much better. So I stuck it out.
I joined a team that is extremely successful, like pulls in 75+% of the offices revenue but has the smallest team. Everyone on this team works harder in their respective roles than the same title in another team including my ABC role. What started as a simple role kept growing and growing as I offered to take on more responsibility and prove I can move up. Fuck I even helped design extremely vital internal programs for the team. Due to the volume of my team, we can't use the systems every other team uses and we used a chaotic one with multiple data entries across different Word files where so many mistakes happened it wasn't even funny. I, on my own time, literally learned how to code and learned VBA and designed an Excel program for the team that consolidated all 5 documents we use into one, and auto generated Word proposals along with many other documents we need. It has essentially become the only tool we use to quote, has lower the time to quote by 75% and reduced the errors to almost 0. I figured surely initiative like that must be rewarded right? Literally nothing besides a pat on the back.
Well we are now past 18 months and I was fed up so I talked with my Manager and asked for a raise simply to be brought up to the level a new hire I refereed STARTED AT which was 5K more also for an ABC role. I had my certification + another they don't even ask for but is good to have, and have shown initiative so they agreed it was doable. They then tied that raise into only happening when I switched teams. I had a meeting with my manager and I explicitly told her the only reason I want to leave is because I am not seeing an opening for an XYZ in the near future. I'd love nothing more than staying on my awesome team I get along great with as an XYZ, and I know I would be damn good at it. I was essentially told this switch was the best chance I have of getting to be an XYZ once I learn how to be an ABC in it.
Well I am suppose to switch over next month but I just found out that they are planning to hire someone with less experience externally as an XYZ on my team. Not only that but it sounds a fucking lot like what I do now has been upgraded to that roles work which makes sense because I basically over the last year have just taken a lot of the XYZ's work off their plate and it has become a part of my role. The members of my team, including one sales guy who is literally the most successful sales guy in all of North America for my company are pissed, and mad at my manager for not even considering me. I read one letter from another XYZ to the Manager basically saying why are we hiring this guy over HHFan12? He already gets along great with the team and I will train him myself. He also reminded them I co-authored that tool we use as it seems like everyone has forgot that. Well apparently there has been radio silence since then. I am not suppose to even know about this new hire so I can't go to my Manager and ask WTF? or I will possibly get my XYZ in trouble who has always been there for me.
Honestly, if this guy gets hired as a XYZ for my team, I don't see any scenario where I am staying at the company. I'm sure being an ABC on another team will be fine, fuck it will be a lot easier from everything I have heard and far less stressful, but now I just feel disrespected. Not to mention I was told before it would take 6 months to be an XYZ after the switch, but I told myself I'll just show my worth and make it 2, which I am realizing now is a fucking pipe dream. I'm taking my raise and immediately looking for a new job. It just really sucks because I really love my team and the culture of the company, but some corporate bullshit from management that doesn't even understand how our team operates is fucking the whole thing up.
TLDR: When you read on here initiative and loyalty isn't rewarded, it's fucking true.
