I am being required to take more than 40 hours of PTO for a week off because I am scheduled 48 hours every other week.

Hello, I am unsure if this is the right place to post this but hopefully it is.

I am an hourly employee who works from home in Minnesota for an international company based in Maine. My schedule is 12 hour shifts 3 days a week one week and 4 days a week the other week. I put in a request for the end of March requesting off one of my long weeks using 40 hours of PTO (10 hour increments for all 4 days I would normally be scheduled). My boss told me today that because I am scheduled for 48 hours I have to spend 48 hours of PTO to take that week off. My questions are essentially as follows, is this normal? If not is this legal? If not what laws prohibit this? I have tried to do my own research on the subject but have not yet found laws prohibiting this I also have not found articles discussing a situation like this.

To anyone who sees this post thank you for your time. If this is the wrong subreddit I would appreciate a reference to a more applicable one and I apologize for my intrusion. I understand that anything I am told here does not constitute legal advice. I am just looking for general insight from other people who may know something related to my situation.
