My 26 year old girlfriend one year out of college with a degree in finance and business management is changing industries, from business to healthcare in three weeks.
She's going to be giving her two weeks notice to the large bank she currently works at making 50k, and will be moving to a position as a program instructor for a retirement home where she will make 21k. She was miserable at the bank, so much so that she has decided to entirely abandon business.
Her new job at this home offered her 14$ an hour, and pay was non-negotiable. The only requirement for this position is a GED. She is very excited about this new position as she wants to work with the elderly, AND because this retirement home has been sending her hand written letters, and given her little notebooks with messages about how "we are building something great together, we are so honored you decided to join us". After her interview they have really been playing nice and have been on her good side.
I just want her to be happy, and to be able to enjoy her work, but am I cynical for thinking this is more exploitative that they would be taking somebody with a four year degree who was maxing over 2x their offering pay, and giving them 14$ but just playing off of the knowledge she really wants a nice "team" and work environment?
It just reminds me when I was in high-school working at a fireworks store, and you would get out at 10pm, but since the boss was such a cool friendly chill guy you would stay until 2am helping restock everything, and then he's say "alright see you tomorrow at 8am!". Being inside the bubble I thought I was just part of the team, but it was obvious from anyone outside it was just exploitative not kind.
