I was unemployed so I took a job as an independent contractor and it’s pretty decent money for the amount of hours. However, my parents don’t really consider it to be a serious opportunity.
I had an employee job offer that didn’t pan out (not my choice) which paid $500/week. Now I make more than that in a week for almost half the amount of hours. Plus this work is more aligned with my major/interests than that job was. Yet my parents would still prefer I had that original job because it’s a tradition hourly paid job with a guaranteed check at the end of the week.
I don’t plan on being an independent contractor forever, but for the time being I’m enjoying it. Plus I’m taking a much needed break from vigorous all-day job applications, which is nice. Yet their attitude is making me feel less optimistic about this opportunity. My friends have been really supportive but at the end of the day I would like my parents’ approval.
What do you think? Do you view independent contract work as a legitimate opportunity and do you think my parents just have an old-fashioned view of “work?” Or do you think the traditional employee type of job is the only job that’s really valid?
TLDR: I’m an independent contractor and my parents don’t think that’s valid/would rather I make half the money with a “real job”
