It’s been about a year since I graduated from university and I still have no job. To give a bit of background, I graduated from a good school in Canada with an Honours Bachelors of Economics, and then went to a top school to get a professional Master’s degree in finance/economics, which I the completed the coursework for at the end of 2019 and began my job search.
I am thinking of going back to school to get a PhD in Economics or Finance, but since the deadline is at the beginning of January for applications, I want to get a quick reality check before I apply. (I personally wanted to go the professional route, but you can only live in your parent’s basement so long, especially if you are not bringing in any money). What sort of next steps should I do?
Also, just to give a bit of context about what this year has been like so far, I have applied to around 100 jobs, asked multiple people (e.g. from fellow classmates, graduates in industry, and the designated person in my program) for advice on my resume. Even though everyone has said that everything seems fine and I have been rather open to the jobs I have applied for, but still have been rejected or worse still, not received any response.
It seems like I have done all the advice recommended to me, even if its sometimes contradictory (like focusing on a particular area of interest vs not being too picky on your first job). I know 2020 has been hard, but most of the others in my program have already been employed (or got a paid internship that moved to employment). So fellow redditors, what piece of advice would you give me going forward?
