Anyone work in jobs outside of their major then move to a job in their majors field years later with minimal experience?

I graduated college with a double major and never had any internships since I worked full-time while going to school full-time and didn't see it as important at that time. I got offered a job at EMC which is now Dell and worked their 5 years. I loved working in IT but my job was extremely specialized. I wanted to make a career move and there was nothing open in my state. I ended up switching careers and now work in construction as an assistant project manager.

I have realized construction is not a good fit for me at this time after working there for about 3 years. I want to get an entry level job in one of my original majors but I am not sure if 8 years later my degrees will be essentially irrelevant now. I am hoping someone else has a story to share that is similar. Thank you in advance.
