I’m on the cusp of graduating and earning a bachelors in political science with a concentration in the Middle East. For about a year or so I’ve been researching jobs and the idea of working as an intelligence analyst for a federal agency sounds fairly intriguing to me. For starters, I have no prior internships (was going to seek one prior to the whole covid thing).
Furthermore, I have a just a bachelors in political science with a fairly solid gpa (above 3.0). I am graduating from a highly coveted university, not Ivy League or private, but it has the largest alumni network in the country. I understand that the government does not take kindly to drug use, and I had stopped smoking close to a year ago. My records clean as well.
The only problem with the entire process is that I legitimately have no method of “getting my feet wet” and building up experience. I worked simple jobs to pay bills throughout my college experience because I come from a lower income background. So I wasn’t sure if just straight up applying and hoping I hear back was the best choice because my prior experience was simple stuff like being a cashier for liquor stores.
I haven’t really found any resources to help me with that, and I know my school provided online job fairs but I am fairly dead set on federal agencies with the CIA being my top choice.
In anyone’s opinion, should I contact my school advisor and see if there’s more resources to help reach out for jobs like this? I feel like my resume is going to get completely passed up in favor of some Ivy League shmuck who had better access to resources and preparation than I have. Also, I was thinking after I graduate next month I’d go work at a nearby factory for a few months to save up some money. By doing that, am I jeopardizing any window of time after graduation for getting a job with them? Or should I apply sooner than later? Thanks!
