Just finished an interview today and it went really well. A lot of tips I’ve found here have been amazing. I wanted to suggest something to people that I don’t see suggested often. If your anxiety is mostly mental then this likely won’t help you. But if you get the dry mouth, red face, shakey voice and hands, etc. I have a good suggestion for you.
There’s something called propranolol. It’s a beta blocker. Which means it stops the adrenaline response in your body. Meaning no physical symptoms of anxiety. You’ll still be nervous but you won’t ever have the physical symptoms of it. Performers use it before going on stage because it keeps them calm and steady. Either way, you know if you’re one of these people. If you are I’d highly recommend going to the doctor and asking if it’s right for you. It’s non-addictive unlike Xanax (a commonly prescribed drug for interviews), and it’s pretty safe in general.
I went from having my voice crack, getting flush, and freaking out due to the physical symptoms to being able to perform my best at an interview. The nervousness is still there but it’s way easier to overcome when you know you won’t start randomly shaking.
Let me know if anyone else has tried it. My SO takes it too for interviews and it’s a life saver. Almost any doctor will give it to you if they see you fit the description.
Just thought I’d offer this as a tip. Because nothing else has ever worked for me. No amount of preparation has stopped the physical symptoms. But now my preparation DOES matter. It makes the interview even better when I can deliver my words confidently.
