Paying for background check/reimbursement?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the real world and need some advice. Who better to turn to than strangers on reddit? I'm short on money and trying to gain teaching experience, and to solve both problems I decided to pick up tutoring. The company that I am onboarding with told me that I need to pay for my own background check up front and they will reimburse me later. It is a pretty well-known tutoring company. Am I a sucker if I pay for the check? Will they never pay me back? Tutors are technically independent contractors. Help?? Thank you guys :)
