I’ve been a teacher for 17 years. And, I think I'm ready to leave the classroom. Let me explain.
Five years ago, I co-created a new, student-drive learning environment. We ask students to build projects (of their interest) that fuse three subjects together. It has flipped my role as a teacher into facilitator and allows me to guide over 45 projects at once - instead of one lesson plan for all. In a typical day, I meet with 15 students developing 15 different topics to help them build their project process. It’s fast paced and exciting to help students bring THEIR ideas and passions to life. We’ve gotten significant recognition and attention for the program.
My creative capacity is directed to helping students. And, I really enjoy my “work”. But as I approach 40, school is all I’ve ever known. I would love to work for as a learning and development specialist for a video game company. I want to help be part of the bigger projects in a different position.
My point is…are teachers valued outside of the educational setting? Or, is it held against us? Would my creativity, project management skills, and grit hold up against the credentials of “more qualified candidates”? I'm really not sure what life is like in the real world.
