Hi! I'm looking for my next job opportunity currently and am a little nervous about what I'm able to ask for in terms of salary to be honest. I'm 2 years out of college, and 1.5 years of real work experience. I'm working an entry-level role, making $50K now (35-hour work week) + overtime, which may be $30-$35K more, which sounds crazy but there's that. I've hear that people don't consider job changes unless it's 15-30% more--if I go by those metrics, what should I be applying that percentage increase to if I go for another entry level position at another company in my field, especially with most jobs being 40-hour work weeks?
How do I approach this question when being asked? Does it seem weird to be asking about pay structure (if my role would be considered exempt or non-exempt, expected hours, etc.) in the first conversation with HR? Should I only ask when the offer is made?
This is NYC, while looking for jobs in other big markets like SF, LA.
