Leaving a job when Employer has been very supportive during COVID

I joined a new company in February 2020 and the company is located in Vietnam (sort of headhunted). In March 2020, I returned home overseas as there was an emergency at home. Due to Covid-19 and border lockdown, I have been unable to return to Vietnam to work.

During this period, I have been on a Work From Home scheme, drawing 20% of my contracted salary. My boss (whom is a very very nice lady and someone whom I had worked with in a previous company), has been supportive and assured me that the company is doing whatever they can not to retrench, although this though is lingering in my mind, considering that Vietnam is still on a border lockdown and my industry is mainly dealing in tourism and international travellers are VERY important for the company.

I began looking for jobs in July 2020, since it has been some months that I have been unable to return to work on a full salary and that my savings is dwindling due to payment commitments. I recently managed to secure a new job locally paying slightly better than my current job in Vietnam, although I have yet to sign the contract. My return flight to Vietnam is scheduled on 17 September 2020 and I must add that HR has been working hard to gather all relevant approvals for me to enter Vietnam. With my return to Vietnam, my salary will be now be 75% of my contracted salary.

While I prefer to accept the local job, I feel bad since my boss and company has been super supportive of me during this period, when business has been bad and they could have terminated my contract. My family has also told me not to return to Vietnam since travelling is risky now and there is a chance to contract Covid-19. How do I tell my boss that I am resigning and should I go back to Vietnam and settle all logistics and serve my 1 month notice period properly even if the company tells me that its ok? To further add on, returning to Vietnam will incur expensive fees, since I have to take the Covid-19 tests and also quarantine hotel fees, which adds up to approximately $2000USD.

Really need some advice here. Thanks in advance
