So, unemployment sucks. I had an awesome job as a bartender in a family-owned fine dining restaurant for nearly three years, even getting employee of the month once and being nominated multiple times. Then, Covid hit and my restaurant is shut down indefinitely. They might re-open by December, but, even with my savings and basic unemployment keeping me afloat, I don't want to wait that long. I'm not looking for anything crazy; I'd be happy to be slinging coffee at a Starbucks.
The thing is, before that last job, I wasn't exactly in the best of ways. Nothing serious, legally (worst I had was driving with an expired license), but I didn't exactly have a spotless employment history. In the span of two years, I'd gone through three different employers: one I was fired from for missing a shift, one I quit within a month, and one I was fired from for coming into work drunk. On my resume and on job applications, I've been lying about my reasons for leaving these employers, as well as duration of time I'd worked them (including leaving one of them off entirely---the one-month-then-quit one), stretching out the periods to be more continuous and cover gaps of unemployment (worst was a two-month stretch).
A close friend of mine who's been a manager at places like I'm applying says that I'm fine, that being honest about this period of time is not a good idea, and that, given the kinds of jobs I'm applying for, there is very little chance of a background check that will go into any significant detail regarding these things. I'm not sure how much I should trust that, though. I know many of the businesses I'm applying to (grocery stores, restaurants, retail) do some sort of background check normally---as far as I can tell, criminal and credit. But would anything relating to my job history come up? How far can/should I stretch the truth? Should I just be honest, at least about the time periods?
