I really have to get out of Ohio. Without getting into nitty-gritty politics, culture, etc., I simply don't fit in here. When it comes to jobs, I've only been able to get secretary work because where I live is still like the 1950's and being a woman basically always gets me secretary work. Pay is low too. Only top-tier managers make about $50k-$60k and that's as far as it goes. I have a Bachelor's in Business.
To get out of here, do I get a job in another city first or do I move there first? I would feel more comfortable/secure moving with a job already in place, because I want to know my salary. I don't want to risk moving somewhere and not getting jobs in a pay bracket I deserve. I've never made over $30,000 (after taxes) which I blame on where I live. I have 4 years in office work, 2 years in customer service, and 2 internships in my experience. I'm hoping to get something around $50k.
I'm looking at Seattle, WA or Denver, CO. I know both are expensive places to live, but I'm a single person, with my only debt being student loans that aren't terribly crushing. I've been to Denver on visits and loved it, absolutely loved it. But I'm aware of their population boom/crisis which I find very crazy... as I've been a fan of Denver for years before this all happened. It was always a relaxed mountain place, a hidden gem. It's a bit hectic now and I hate being someone looking to settle there with the rest of the country. But I still have loved the place for a long time.
Would anyone here like to share their job relocation stories? What worked for you? What do you wish you had done differently? How impossible is it to get a job in another state? I hear people do it all the time, but in my experience I seem to only find job listings that require applicants to be in the area.
