Feeling exploited in my new position. Any advice?

I just started this "job" as an editor today, so maybe it's too early to tell if my instinct is right. The work itself is fine, but the structure of the employment has me a little weirded out.

It's a political fundraising accelerator start-up, and they only take on new staff on a fellowship basis. I'm expected to be online for at least 8 to 9 hours a day to edit donation emails and do QA type stuff, but the pay is only $1000/month. In the interview they floated the possibility of a full time job offer later on down the line, but they didn't get into a specific timeline and the fellowship isn't time-limited per my contract or any discussions we had during the hiring process. They told me that the main way they hire is through these fellowships, but I have no idea if that's actually true.

The circumstances of my hiring were also a bit off. I had three interviews over the course of a week, and got an offer letter yesterday after my third interview. We never discussed salary, a payment schedule, or work load. Admittedly, these were things I should have brought up, but I'm a recent grad and my only experience is in research and NGO/nonprofit work where the circumstances were different. I was only made aware of the enormous time commitment after my onboarding was finished, and my first day was today where I edited those spammy donation emails you get during election season from 10 to 7.

I feel exploited and slightly resentful after literally one day, and I can't tell if it's a personal issue or if the situation is actually that weird. On the one hand I'm very lucky that I can work remotely and have some kind of income after the enhanced unemployment benefits end, but on the other the pay equates to like $5.50 an hour. What would you do in my situation? I think I may give it a month on a more limited schedule, but I've never been in this kind of situation. I'm also waiting on funding confirmation from an MA program, so hopefully that comes through.
