Hi all,
I’ve found myself in a strange situation. I’m currently employed (let’s call them Company A), but am unhappy with management so I’ve been searching for jobs.
I’ve moved forward in an interview process with Company B, and feel like I’m close to getting an offer, and they’ve asked for 3 professional references - preferably from someone who has directly managed me.
I left my previous employer (Company C) on great terms, so I called my previous boss to ask for a reference but he actually wants to re-hire me and is even trying to work with his management to open a spot for me during these tough times. He was great to work for and I’d be happy to do so again.
However, this isn’t guaranteed, so I’d like to keep my options open. I feel like it would be in bad taste to ask for my previous manager’s recommendation when he’s trying to get me a job within his company. This means that I can only use my current (company A) coworkers as a reference if I trust them and that obviously excludes management.
My concerns are: 1) Is it in bad taste to continue with interviewing company B when my previous boss (company C) is trying to get me a job? 2) HR at company B may see it as a red flag for not referencing my previous manager and could possibly think I left on bad terms, when in fact the opposite is true.
Any advice on how to handle this situation? Should I be upfront with the new company (B) that my previous employer is interested in rehiring me? Any input is appreciated!
