After work socials, and the etiquette of not attending?

Hey all.

So, since COVID, my team of about 15 has been working remotely. We'll have video check ups periodically through the week; and I always attend. I've been doing my work, albeit a bit slower than usual but that is expected.

Every Friday at 5:00, it seems there's a staff social where everyone video chats and drinks, chats, socializes, etc. I have no issues with this, in fact I attended the first two and had drinks, had laughs, and got to know my team well.

Anyways, the last two weeks I've missed it, due to having to pick up groceries and this week having furniture delivered. I've gotten multiple messages to the sort of "Where are you" or "Why were you not there" from Partners and Managers.

The thing is, it's not MANDATORY, and it's at 5:00pm after working hours. I've explained I had things come up, but it feels like there is a weird tension about this. I don't really understand it. Is this normal?

I don't mind socializing with my team a bit on Friday, but EVERY Friday, after spending a whole week working with them on various projects and other video calls? That's a bit excessive. And frankly, I don't want to necessarily see them after an entire week going back and forth with them.

Sorry for the rant, but is this normal at all? I work for a Big 4 Consulting firm for context. Lots of drink the kool-aid type of mentality.
