Interview for positions multiple times to find out there is no position.

As the title says, I have had to travel a decent amount just to get to the interview and I interviewed well as I was complemented alot by the interviewers and was told "we really like you, but sadly we do not have a position open, but I will ask around". That obviously ends in a rejection email or no word a few days later. This has happened twice already. Plus some context, the positions I applied to originally were posted on their careers page and showed them open. These were with large reputable companies. This is very unprofessional and rude to waste my time and others. I was never even offered reimbursement for travelling to the interview. Any thoughts or similar experiences?
