I'm a few years into a technical position at a company that doesn't train and I still feel like I'm struggling. Is quitting really my only realistic option?

"Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to." - Richard Branson.

I'll start off with my question: I'm a few years into a technical position at a company that doesn't train and I still feel like I'm struggling. Is quitting really my only realistic option? Put another way, should I continue to try to learn as I go or basically give up and find another job? Have you ever worked for a company that doesn't train? What did you do?

My situation at work is the opposite of the above quote. I feel like I am not trained up to the level I should be by now, at least not to where I could leave to a similar or better position. We could talk about the fact I want to leave because of how I've been treated but I mainly want to focus on the training part.

In case you're wondering, I got hired because I was able to prove my ability to learn technical material. I was told by the hiring manager (now my boss) that they would train me for six months. I ended up doing paperwork and shadowing a senior employee for a few days and then got thrown in the deep end.

I have managed to learn enough to do my job decently through gaining experience over time and asking tons of questions. I guess the fact that I get positive annual reviews and haven't been fired means I'm doing reasonably okay. However, I still feel like I'm struggling. I get anxious because I sometimes face technical problems I've never solved before.

I WANT to know everything I need to know about my job, but the difficulty I face is that I don't get training on the hands-on portion for a lot of it. I've even asked for training on certain needed skills, and it never happened. I've been able to learn a lot of the "head" knowledge but still have problems with the practical hands-on portion.

What's a bit scary to me is that I'm over three years into my role. Why is it scary to me? It is because my resume will read that I have X years of experience in a technical role and people looking at the may think that I should know what I'm doing.

I have gained SOME skills that I'm good at. I might be able to parlay that into another job or I might look into a career change.

At the end of the day, I wonder if I really just have to make the best of it and look for other employment? Is there another option I might not be considering?

Thanks for your advice!
