I’ve been working at a new company for the past 2 months and really love it here. However, at the start of the coming week my job classification will be changed from salary exempt to salary non-exempt, meaning that I have to go through the tedious process of logging my hours and cannot exceed 40 hours in a single week without receiving overtime. Because of this change, management is taking away a lot of the flexibility that I love about this job, making it less feasible to work from home and having to work for solid 8 hour “shifts”. I’m extremely concerned about this because every person in my department is firmly against this change, and the decision was made without first asking any of the people it would be affecting. I’m also going on a business trip in 2 weeks, and not a single person in management has been able to answer my concerns about how I’m supposed to count what hours are hours worked during the trip, especially since management has made it abundantly clear that we absolutely cannot work any overtime without approval.
I’ve only had this job for 2 months, and I feel like the flexibility that I love about it is being taken away. It’s so incredibly stupid that management would do this since so many people in my department already tend to work over 40 hrs a week, but now we’re not allowed to do that anymore and will struggle to get work done on time, especially since we deal with clients from different time zones. I’m greatly concerned about how things will be going forward and would appreciate any advice you all can give on how I should interpret this. Some people in my department are already discussing plans to leave because of this change, and I’d hate for that to be my best option as well.
