Back in February I had two interviews lined up. I told my employer about them because I didn’t want to lie about why I was taking time off. My employer then offered me a new position, which came with an immediate £3,000 pay rise and the promise (in writing) that I’ll get a further salary increase of £4,000 in 2019 taking my salary to £30,000 a year. In hindsight it may have been the wrong decision, but I decided to take the job.
Nothing has been said about the additional £4,000 yet and I want to discuss it with the head of HR (my previous manager) soon. The thing is, this new role isn’t exactly what was described, and I’m not doing as much work as I thought I would be, which makes me feel like I can’t justify asking to be paid £30,000 a year (despite the fact that this salary was promised to me).
I want to ask for the pay rise because I’m saving for a house deposit and it would really help, but deep down I feel like I don’t deserve to be paid £30,000 a year for the work that I do. I’m working on a big project at the moment and I feel like once it’s completed I would have a good argument for making that sort of money, but it could be another year from now.
What are your thoughts? Should I ask for the pay rise or wait until I have more work to show for it? If I do ask for it, what’s the best way to go about it?
