I've worked in IT for a couple decades, primarily as a business systems analyst. I'm creative, detail-oriented, and driven. I'm an Excel expert and very strong in other technologies too. I adapt quickly to new technology and business concepts.
However....
I'm currently looking for part-time work doing something more mundane, like retail or office administration, but I'm having a hard time figuring what to do with my resume. I have 20 years of IT and 10 years of music performance experience, neither of which apply to the kind of jobs I want. I've applied to a number of jobs and included my technology resume and heard back from nobody. In most of the jobs I'm applying for I would be an amazing acquisition for the company, but I think they assume I'm overqualified and not really interested in copying and stapling, or counting back change.
I do have retail and cashier experience but it was 30-40 years ago, and not vast. I did it for a semester or a summer, or after high school for a few months. I don't think the risk of putting jobs from 1980 on my resume and exposing my age before they meet me is worth the benefit of showing them that I have light experience.
I'm not sure what to put on a resume for a hiring managers who are comfortable hiring 22 year-olds with little to no job experience.
What can I do with my resume to make myself more appealing?
