Craigslist job asks for references?

I applied for a temporary office job off Craigslist that's well suited for my skills (I'm a writer). The post asked for examples of work and I sent some links with my cover letter and resume. I also said I wanted to learn more about them (the ad lists them as being an independent publication company but nothing specific).

Now they replied and asked for references. And they didn't provide any more info. Is that weird?

Is it ok to just send references and not really know what the job is? Part of me is always nervous giving out friend's numbers for references and half of me thinks it's stupid given I gave them my resume and examples of my work.

I'm not even sure how interested I am in working there given how little I know.
