I recently finished my training, and for my first real shift, I was put by myself to close. My training was very informal, as I'm sure most starter jobs are, and there are still a lot of things I'm not sure how to do, but my training is officially over.
My shift was supposed to end at 9:30, but I ended up staying past 10:30 because my manager did not get back to me until after 10:00 after I was having problems with the cash and closing and everything. I had been told how to do this once 2 weeks prior and even explained before my first real shift I didn't understand what to do clearly. My manager assured me that I could call her and she'd help if I was confused, which I did after trying to figure it out myself.
Being my first time closing I was rushing so hard to get everything done in time and it still wasn't enough! I was so confused and flustered that this wasn't all written down any where and was expected to know what to do after having minimal explanation or practice!
I did not take my break as there was a lot I needed to do before closing; even without the break I had to stay over an hour after, so I can't imagine how much longer I would have been there if I had actually taken it.
I got a call the following morning from (I believe the district manager?) immediately asking why I did not take a break, and why I was there so late. They sounded very accusatory and would repeatedly ask me "were you not trained?" After I tried to explain the situation and how I was confused. When asking why I didn't take my break I said I didn't know I needed one, and she said "well, (coworker) said you just looked at her" (after they reminded me I needed to take one). I was so put on the spot and wasn't sure how to respond, all I could really do was apologize. She just said I needed to work on closing faster for next time and to not wait for my manager and to call her if I had questions. We have a group chat for work and a minute before they called me they publicly asked for my phone number, instead of privately asking my manager for it. I had never met or talked to them before this phone call. They often handle matters publicly in the group chat.
After researching about employee rights, I now completley understand that they could have gotten in trouble since I did not take a mandatory break for working more than 5 hours. So that I can understand, although I was not aware that this was mandatory and they could get in trouble. They posted in our group chat later that if they hear of anyone not taking a break they will receive a written warning.
This whole thing seems very unprofessional to me and I'm not sure how to feel about it - this was my first time doing any of this alone after all, and they don't seem to be understanding about it. I'm new to working and don't see why this was handled so aggressively... especially for a minimum wage job. I understand I should have been told what I was doing was wrong, but this seemed too much. I'm worried this will happen again but with something different that I wasn't properly told about. This doesn't sit right with me but I'm not sure what to do, or if I should even do anything at all.
Sorry if this doesnt make much sense, I'm still trying to process what happened. Next time I close I'm with another coworker so I'll have to watch what they do and write down every little detail so I can remember.
