Got an interview several states away. How do I ask for 2-3 days off for this? Should I just be honest?

I work in higher ed and have the opportunity to interview for a dream position in a dream city. Feels like hitting the jackpot! But I'm not sure how to ask for the 2-3 days off that I will need to fly there and back.

I once had a supervisor who told me he was honest with his superiors when he interviewed for his current job. Because they knew, they were more prepared for his departure and no one was taken by surprise. I highly respect my coworkers and I'm thinking about just telling the truth, but I know they will be disappointed and maybe even a little hurt that I want to leave. So if I don't get the position it would be awkward. But I also feel like if I don't tell them the honest reason why I need time off that they may tell me I can't take those days off. I would be asking two weeks in advance and I have nothing on my calendar for those days.

I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance and/or guidance.
