Research scientist looking for something new.

I'm a research scientist with 10years+ experience. I have a BS in biology. However, after 12 years I want to leave research and move into a firm that would be more pharma advocacy/lobbying, or government relations. Anyone have any advise/help they could offer to make this transition possible? I live in the Maryland, DC, Virgina area.
