I graduated in July from my Environmental Science related degree. Preface: I am not blaming anyone for my current position. Though I am of the belief that my University could've advised us on the importance of applying for jobs beginning at the start of Final year. (There also wasn't much of an emphasis on the importance of Summer Internships in 2nd year.)
As my University did not emphasise the importance of the above, I only started to look into positions in June of 2019 (following the completion of my exams) and I have only just finished a Summer Internship - a year too late.
At the moment I am applying to Environmental Science related positions. At this stage, I have applied for 10 vacancies and I have been rejected by a few already, with one unsuccessful Assessment Centre. I have indeed taken on board advise from a previous thread and started looking at Indeed.com instead of restricting myself to my Universities Job Search site. Although there is still only 40 positions in Northern Ireland and many positions request prior experience related to the job in hand - which would be impossible for a Graduate to have.
I should also say that many Government Fast track schemes have shut for the year, i.e. Civil Service Fast Stream.
I'm not sure what i'm supposed to be doing in the interim aside from applying for jobs? Am I supposed to sit here and just look at jobs everyday? Am I supposed to volunteer? Am I supposed to apply for Internships? Should I forget about applying for jobs related to my Degree and apply for a retail job? Do I go on holiday? Do nothing? I don't know, no one has advised me on this 'section' of life beyond Graduation - aside from applying to jobs.
Aside from watching YouTube videos on the topic, I haven't come across many discussing this. It seems that a lot of people seem to just walk into a Graduate scheme immediately following Graduation, certainly that's what I am seeing on LinkedIn. (I don't know how they are getting these jobs without the experience).
Aside from a once monthly careers centre call I don't have anyone providing guidance. I am trying to progress forward and I am struggling. I am going in blind to this.
When I discuss this with my Careers Adviser, they just say 'It's up to you' and don't provide possible avenues or recommendations as to where I could go next. I.e. apply for Retail, MSC or an Internship?
I have seriously been thinking of going to America and the Caribbean for a month in January because I can see myself sitting here in the same position at that point.
