Before you say it: Yes, I am an idiot.
I went to a hiring event that was supposedly hiring for office positions in a company's distribution center. Completed the application before I went, brought my resume, dressed for the general "Office Clerk" position that I wanted.
During the interview, I highlighted all of my administrative skills and anything that I thought was applicable to what they were looking for. The interviewer looked bored, read off questions from a piece of paper while making little eye contact. At the end, he said I would be a great fit and offered me the position. I accepted, and he told me to wait in the lobby for a moment while they finalize the offer and print off some documents.
I waited for about 45 minutes. He comes back, says that I'll actually be in a different department than the one posted, and that I will be on the distribution floor, but he insisted "it's still a clerical position, you won't be doing anything beyond your desk area". I felt something in my gut to back out, but I was so desperate for a job that isn't back breaking, I went with it.
First day comes along. I was completely lied to. I am basically doing warehouse picking and packing, the only "clerical" work I am doing is using a printer for shipping labels. There is no desk, I am smack dab with the pickers.
I went to HR and asked why this was, I showed the email confirmation for the application I submitted for the specific position, I was told that "that position isn't available".
So why did I get an interview for it? Why was I offered it? Nobody can answer my questions, not even the manager of the facility.
I can't believe I was this stupid not to trust my gut. I just really wanted to get out of retail 90-hour-weeks unloading trucks. I'm going to apply to other jobs, but I don't know what else I can do in the mean time. Any advice is appreciated.
