How terrible of an idea would it be to disclose my... unconventional... social media experiance in an interview?
Sorry in advance if this breaks any rules.
I'm a recent grad on the hunt for a job, and I've been looking at positions in copywriting/social media marketing at young, progressive companies. I have a relevant degree but not a lot of job experience. A lot of the positions I'm looking at require experience in social media, which I do have – though you wouldn't know it from looking at my (very average) Instagram or Twitter followings.
See, I have over 18K followers, but I've gathered them from posting nudes on Reddit. It's been great for my self-confidence, given me a platform to showcase my photography skills, and, yeah, I like the attention, too.
You might think it's easy to for a young woman to gather 18K followers from posting pictures of her butt, and to some degree that's true - but it's not as easy as you'd think. Keep in mind thousands of attractive young women post nudes on Reddit every day. You've got to work to stand out: it requires consistency, engagement, and a commitment to quality content. I've learned when the best times to post are, and what titles and content get the best responses. I've developed a voice and a brand, and I maintain a personal code of conduct. In short, it's taught me the skills that these positions are looking for. And no, I never show my face.
I know that if I were to disclose the fact that I have 18K social media followers in a resume or cover letter, I'd almost certainly be asked about it in an interview. However, I can't help but wonder if, in the appropriate environment and with the right interviewer, candidly discussing my experience could be an asset. At best, I feel it could speak to my honesty, creative thinking, and willingness to take risks. At worst, I worry it could be misinterpreted as a come-on or sexual harassment. How terrible of an idea would it be?
