So after months of interviewing, the company I'd been interviewing with finally gave me a job offer and it is 10k USD under what I'd asked for initially.
This has annoyed me as at one point during the conversation relatively early on during the process, I stated a figure and then the person said "Ah, this is actually a contract position which comes with no benefits, no medical insurance, no pension contributions, etc so you might want to reconsider that figure" On top of this, they expect me to maintain my own PC/laptop hardware and will not provide anything in that regard, they also want me to pay out of my own pocket to get certified on a number of subjects, one of which is $500 USD and do a lot of learning in my own time - there may also be weekend and on call related work but I can't remember about that as this interview process has been going on forever!
It isn't like I asked for a lot of money either, I asked for 50k USD and I have around 10 years experience in the IT field, admittedly this job is kind of a side step for various reasons and I have no experience in some of the technologies that I used... but nobody has ever come back with an offer so low before, there is being low-balled by 2k but then there is a 10k gap which I think is just taking the piss quite frankly.
I'd happily accept 40k USD if they were giving some benefits out with it, insurances, pensions, paid holiday, etc but they are not and so I asked for a bit more, it seemed reasonable and the person I spoke to appeared to agree.
Now I'm a bit stuck, there's only one pro to this job really and that is that it is close to where I live, well, maybe two... and the second one is that if I do get certified in all of these things, that seems to potentially open a lot of doors. So, lol, should I join a company from the get go with the intention of leaving ASAP? I can't imagine I'll ever get anything more out of them at any point in the future given that they have thrown such an insanely low ball in the first instance. Also, 3 months of interviews for a low paid contract position, FML.
I'm going to try and negotiate this and I'm willing to see what exactly are in the terms of the contract (they haven't actually provided the full details yet) but yeah, the 10k salary difference has left an insanely bad taste in my mouth.
Any advice? I reckon I am up the Mississippi without so much as a paddle to help me out though.
