Employers are putting me in an uncomfortable spot.

I recently found out that they are purposely not giving my coworker enough work to do, because they know it’s making her unhappy. She has been loudly complaining about not having enough to do, and they are aware of it. They want her to be unhappy so she will leave on her own. They did this a few years ago to a person they didn’t like as well. They were rude and mean to her until she left. So I know this is their M.O. They don’t want to get HR involved for some reason that I am not aware of.

It is putting me in a spot, because I work near her and see how unhappy she is, and frequently hear her complaints, but there’s nothing I can do. I have to not say a word because I want to keep my job. I worry that they will decide they don’t like me either. So it’s very uncomfortable and awkward.

Granted, she does have an abrasive personality. She has pissed off more than one higher-up with her poor attitude. And I have gone home more than once in tears because she frustrated me in one way or another, but she is very good at what she does and very efficient. Wouldn’t you think that’s the important thing? Or is it more important for employers that we are always pleasant?

Regardless, I think it’s not cool that they’re just leaving it like this for all of us other employers to deal with. It’s easy for the bosses because they’re not here on a day-to-day basis, but not for me and others down in the trenches.
