Does it actually pay to not be an office bully? I took the advice of people on here to quit my job where I ran into a bully, only to find another one at my next job. I find that among top managers, about 50% at least are usually bullies. As someone tired of getting stepped on, does it pay to bully?

I get that no one wants to say it pays to be a bully, but the reality is that barely 10% of bullies actually get sacked for their bullying. Bullies usually rise through the ranks, taking out people in their path, and everyone below them quits. Sure, the bully might eventually get fired years and year later, but they have a much longer, more comfortable tenure than everyone else. The people above them don’t care that you leave to go work somewhere else. They don’t care if everyone leaves to go work somewhere else. So we’re not sending a message to anyone when we leave. Their bosses just think “they were incompetent.” And if you complained about the bully, their boss also thinks that you’re a complainer.

I was reading on LinkedIn that bosses actually like bully subordinates, because bullies do the dirty work—allowing th boss to keep their hands clean—and are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain productivity. Sometimes this means turning over a whole staff and working overtime to do the work of people who were ostracized and asked to leave.

So as someone who usually takes the high road, should we start playing hardball with bullies?
