What is the point of job references?

From job application to job offer, what is the official job process?

Hi all.

I had an in-person interview, and they seemed to like me. I met with the vice president and some various members of the operation team. They seemed to like the experience I brought and the personality I showed.

After sending a thank you letter today, the interview was yesterday, the recruiter immediately got back to me, asking for professional references. I did not know that was a thing. But the recruiter asked for 2-3 points of contact.

What questions do they ask? What is the point of references?

From my previous experience, I've never been asked before. So is this a guaranteed that I will get the job? Where does asking for references fall into the job aplication cycle?
