"We can conduct a salary review after your probation period is completed"

Hello folks,

I work in IT but I'm sure this question applies to everyone else:

During the negotiation stage, I asked for compensation closed to $70k, they initially gave me $62k but I was able to get them to give me $64k with a salary review after my probation is completed...

How often do people get a salary increase after passing your probationary period? Is this just an Employer's trick to make you accept the offer? Do you get a significant increase even if your performance is top-notch?
