I've been working in the media as a writer for about 2 years, formally. Before that, I was in university and freelanced. Then I worked as a social media personnel for a company for a year before moving on to become a beauty & fashion writer now. I've been working here for four months & my contract is a year (but I can quit if I give a notice in advance). I love my job because it's what I've always wanted to do but I realized that I'm not paid enough. I could be a freelancer & earn much more.
When I was offered the contract, they cut my pay by $100 a month because "everyone starts out at X amount" (I already quit my previous job so I took it anyway) & I've heard that people who have been in this company for 3 years make the same amount as I do, which means they either started lower or didn't get an increment, which is most likely the latter. I just realized that this industry cannot pay me. It's a pretty good company - and looks good on my CV but aside from basic pay, I don't get medical insurance or retirement funds. I'm thinking that I should try to leave.
My husband & I are moving to a new place which means we'll be a bit strapped for cash. A private school near my home is hiring education assistants, and I was wondering if I should apply?
Pros:
- It's near my home... I could walk there & save on transport. My current workplace is an hour away from home by commute.
- The salary range is pretty high, even for education assistants
- The working hours are school hours, which I quite like.
- If I get the job, I get all the benefits like medical and retirement, which I don't get now.
It's really different from what I do. I've only ever facilitated journalism camps. I'm afraid I may not like the change but will like the money & location. What do you think? Based on your working experience, what would you do? Should I apply anyway (I may not get it), but what happens if I do?
It might be worth mentioning that teaching assistants are not common at where I'm from. I didn't know they existed until the job post, really. It's probably a private school thing here.
