Sending a general LinkedIn message

I was following a company that has interesting campaigns, but not necessarily looking for a position within the company and saw that one of the employees had a position that seemed of interest to me. As a student studying the same field as they work in, but not wanting a position is it too intrusive to send a message asking what steps they took to get into that position? It is not something that I see often, but did not want to come off creepy.
