Previous employer overpaid me

My previous employer overpaid me for my last paycheck. They made a mistake and made a double payment. The sum of money is not much.

They have sent me a notice requesting that I pay back that money in the next week.

I plan on paying back the money to avoid any messy legal issues.

What are the laws and regulations regarding this kind of thing in California? Am I legally required to pay them back? If I don’t pay them back, what consequences could I face?
