So I'm applying as a summer undergrad research assistant. References are not needed, but I feel like it would help my application (since I'm not going to attach my transcript). Since I worked in a lab during the semester, I want to ask my lab mentor for a reference. However, I'm kind of worried about telling her I'm applying for a summer lab position.
At the end of the semester, my lab mentor asked if I was interested in continue work over the summer, but I said no because that meant I'd have to stay the entire summer in the city (and I had already planned vacation). On the other hand, I asked the summer lab I'm applying to and they said I could start when I return from vacation. Both of the labs are located in the same city, so if I tell my lab mentor to recommend me to _______ lab, she'll be confused as to why I'm not working at her lab instead.
Should I just proceed to ask her for a reference and tell her what I'm applying for, or just be vague and say it's for a summer research position (or just a summer job)?
