Young, overeducated, little work experience, struggling on the job market

Hi all -

Really struggling with the job search, starting to crack mentally, wanted to seek advice.

I'm smack in the middle of my 20s, soon to graduate with a PhD with a solid quantitative background and one summer internship at a "big brand" company in my primary domain of interest - no full-time non-internship work experience outside of academia (1 year staff position at my alma mater doesn't really count I figure). I specifically geared my studies to prepare for data science/analysis related positions, and have been applying to such positions.

Looking at my emails and folder of cover letters, I estimate I've sent in 150-200 applications. I've already expanded my geographic scope, and I don't think my already flexible domain scope can get much larger because then it starts to call for financial or biomedical background, which I lack. I've been doing a solid amount of "LinkedIn legwork" reaching out directly to recruiters and hiring managers after submitting applications.

I've had a few nibbles (phone screeners), and even had two applications go as far as technical tests - one of those I'm waiting to hear back about, the other went as far as to ask me about my schedule for a site visit afterwards but then began to ghost. But otherwise, I'm getting slammed with rejections left and right, and of course, that's just for the positions that do you the courtesy of sending you rejections.

I get the feeling that for the more mid-level/senior data scientist positions, I'm getting tossed out for lack of work experience, while for the more junior level analyst positions, I'm seen as overqualified. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? I've considered leaving out my advanced degrees, but at that point I don't even have any kind of selling point given my lack of industry experience. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
