Interviewing for a new job after being at my current position for only 6 months?

I am a Security Officer who works for the in-house Security Department of a government site. There are only 4 full time salaried Officers, one for each shift (1st-3rd) and one Swing Officer who works 9-5pm.

I am the newest of the full-time Officers, being hired on late last year after spending the prior 6 months working about 90 hours a month as a part-time hourly guy to get my foot in the door. So in total I have a year with the department.

I am currently assigned to 2nd shift, which is 2pm-10pm. If I was single, I would probably love this shift. It allows me to sleep in and do things in the morning before work stress free. However it has taken a toll on my personal life. My girlfriend works a typical 8-5 job, so I do not get to see her on weekdays. This puts added stress to find time on the weekends to spend with her, my friends, and family.

I applied for a position as an investigator with another company and was surprised to get a call back from them asking me to interview. The position would offer me a more stable option of working 4 10's instead of 5 8's like I currently am, and it would be 8-6, allowing me to be a normal human being and have time to spend with my SO and friends. I'm comfortable with occasional travel and the occasional long nights that come with the job, as it won't be my normal routine.

With that in mind, I am an essential employee. If I am gone, everyone will have to scramble to fill my place. I am already covering the occasional weekend shift and we are losing hourly guys to cover the weekends left and right. It's easy to not care, but I actually like the guys I work with. All of us including supervisors are military or law enforcement veterans. It's otherwise a good environment and I want a good reference. I'm nervous that me jumping ship so soon will sour them because of what it will do to the department in terms of staffing. We operate on a Government budget so it's not as if it's easy to just hire more guys.

At the same time, continuing on my shift is just killing me on the inside. There's no end in sight as seniority is what determines shift assignment.

Just seeking input on how to tactfully navigate this. I am already asking that the company I interview with not contact references unless an offer is on the table.
