I'll be moving from Europe to a developing country, where my salary will likely be half of what I used to make. How should I handle salary expectations?

Hello everyone,

I understand that most people advise to avoid giving out their current salary when going through job negotiations, but, in most cases, most people are expected to have an increase in salary rather than a decrease. In my case, I will likely make less than I used to make, due to moving from Europe to a developing country (way less living costs though).

Should I actually give out my previous salary in the hopes of HR raising their offer? Or should I proceed with the usual advice (be vague, make recruiter give numbers, etc)? In the case of old organizations with strict salary ranges per position, how should I proceed with negotiation (what in a compensation package is flexible basically)?

Note that I am a citizen of the country that I'll be moving to. Thus, I doubt that I'll be given the "foreigner" salary range.
