I was told I would receive a formal offer but have not?

I interviewed with a company and a day after I received an email which ended with the line "If you are interested, please let us know and we will make you a formal offer. Thank you and look forward to hearing from you" I emailed back that night saying I was interested in the position and would like to move forward.

I didn't receive an offer email so 3 or 4 business days later I contacted the employer again and he said that he had misread my email and didn't realize I wanted the position and would talk to the VP. I called him after I received that email and then he was saying that that email was not an offer for the job and that they will not be making a decision for another few weeks.

I ended up finding the VP of the company's email address, who I also interviewed with, and let him know of the misunderstanding and that although he may have heard I was not interested in the job that I was still interested and I linked the emails. Its been about 1 day since I sent it and he hasn't emailed back.

Is it possible that the the guy who read my email wrong offered the position to someone else and is now trying to cover it up by saying that actually this type of email was not a job offer and that they would not decide for another 2 weeks or do employers send these emails out all the time to potential candidates? Is there anything else I can do or should I just give up and wait?

Thanks
