How to respond to "Salary Expectations"

I applied to a job a while ago and was recently sent a questionnaire to fill out. Most of the questions are about job duties ("do you have experience doing X, Y, and Z," etc.) but the last question was, "What are your salary expectations?" Would it be weird to respond with something like "I expect to be paid a reasonable salary based on the living wage in [City]"? I've heard it's not a good idea to explicitly say how much you expect to get paid. I tried looking this position up online, but the pay scale values vary pretty widely because it's a nationwide nonprofit and the pay really depends on the area.
