How to address being mid-thirties with no employment history?

I've had several difficulties to overcome that were preventing me from working. To discuss them with an employer would be the kiss of death for any chance of obtaining a job. My age and lack of employment will obviously raise a red flag there is something off about me.

I've never seriously looked for a job before. When I halfheartedly tried several years ago my poorly written resume lead to only a couple of interviews. I screwed those interviews up due to issues that are no longer relevant. Now that I'm finally ready to seriously look for work I want to be better prepared.

The position I find myself is due to my deficiencies and poor choices. What I have been doing since completing college won't be explained away even if I find unpaid work to display my ability to be a functional adult.

Is there anything I can put on my resume or be said in a job interview to explain it away without lying? The only thing I can think of to say when directly asked is that my financial situation is such that there is no urgency for money. While partially true, it sounds awfully suspicious to me.
