Why does every job turn out this way?

I feel like the biggest failure. I left a long career in a field I love bc of issues with my boss. It was a bullying situation and I had to involve lawyers, so I was very skittish about going back to an office job full time. I saw some red flags about my current job but needed the paycheck and benefits so thought I’d make the best of it. Initially it was great. But within six months, there have been problems with my boss. It started when my subordinate (i’m supposed to be a manager but I have zero authority) was pulled away to work on another project with no prior discussion. My boss said another employee, who outranks me, would “help out.” Well all this person has done is micromanage me. I’ve met with my boss to ask if I report to this person and while he stressed that no, I still report to him, it’s quite clear day to day that I have a new boss.

These are not the circumstances I was hired under and if they had been, I never would have taken the job. I’ve tried to roll with it but it keeps getting worse. Today I even told him that this is how employees who are underperforming are usually treated, but there has never been one complaint about my work to cause this. All I want it to do my job and be left alone. I’m looking for something new but so worried this pattern will just repeat itself for eternity. I am smart, socially adept, try to be self-aware, personable, a hard worker, and good at what I do. I don’t love authority but I can take orders and follow directions. Is it my fault this keeps happening? Am I screwing up somehow? Please help.
