So how common is it for managers to ask their employees to choose to get fired or resign?

TL:DR

I basically assumed I got fired, but when I got to the office, my manager gave me the option of resigning or being fired. She told me resigning will allow me to still apply within the company(giant conglomerate) at most locations, so how common is this?
