Early this year, I applied for a job with a state government agency (I live in the US). The hiring manager, and person who would probably be my boss if I got hired, is someone I was in law school with. We didn't really know each other then, but have gotten to know each other professionally over the last several years. This person actually told me that the job would be opening up, and when it did he sent me the announcement and link to the application and encouraged me to apply.
I made the first cut and was called in for an interview three weeks ago. It went really well, my former classmate was there, as well as three other people, one of whom is the deputy director of this agency and who remembered meeting me at an industry working group that I and another attorney hosted last year. My classmate walked me out of the building afterwards, and told me that they were interviewing eight people for three positions. This was on a Thursday, and he told me that they would be finishing up interviewing candidates on the following Monday, then would make a decision, and that it would then take a couple more weeks to process through HR before offers would go out.
So fast forward to now, it is about the time when I would expect to be hearing back from them based on what he told me. Of course things can always take longer than expected, especially in government hiring. But I am starting to get anxious, and constantly hitting refresh on my email inbox while working in the hope that I get an email from them.
Given that I already know the hiring manager, is there harm in reaching out and asking for an update? Or should I just chill the F out and be patient like a normal person would do?
