Preface: I am a young professional with multiple internships and short-term jobs under my belt attempting to look for more long-term and sustainable opportunities. I've been applying to a lot of jobs lately, and one thing that's got me uneasy is the question that a lot of them ask about "have you ever been fired or asked to resign from a job? If so, why?"
Three summers ago, I was an "instructional counselor" at an academically-focused summer camp; essentially, I was a combination TA/RA for high-school aged kids. Four days before the end of the second term (I worked two terms, each 2 weeks long. Overall, I would have been working there six weeks counting training periods if I'd made it to the end), I was brought in and asked to resign by my residential coordinator on the basis of not performing my residential duties to a standard that impressed her. I was not asked to resign on the basis of my performance on the academic side of things, and I got along with my instructor and the academic coordinator amazingly. I also got along with all of the kids (both the ones I was in charge of as an RA and the ones I taught).
So I've been trying to figure out how to answer this question on job applications, or even if I should. After all, it was "just" a summer camp counseling job when I was in college, and turnover at that place is literally so high that there is zero way anyone knows anything about what happened at this point. I asked one of the employees at "Main Office" when I left whether my resignation would be reflected in my record, and he said "No. If someone asks, it will reflect that you left but not the reason why." I'm also of the opinion that honesty is the best policy and why lie if they might figure it out, but at the same time I'm wondering if even something this inconsequential is holding me back from advancing to the interview round, simply because I'm honestly self-reporting.
