Company has not viewed my application, should I contact them?

So I applied to a small company down the street via Handshake (it's like LinkedIn for college students, kind of), and the application status is still pending. This means that it has not been viewed by the company (otherwise it would say Reviewed). I really want this job and think it could be a great opportunity for me as an internship, plus it's convenient because it's super close. The position was supposed to start January 9th but they still have their application open (until August). I submitted my app on the 9th.

Is contacting companies to express interest a thing, or do people just wait until their applications are viewed?
